The following excursions and field trips are included in the program. All field trips will be guided by Cal Poly faculty and Peruvian professionals and include lecture material that is part of the Cal Poly GE courses.

It is the life dream of many people to hike the Inca trail and visit majestic Machu Pichu, arguably the most famous archeological site in the Americas . From Cuzco, students will stay the first night in Ollantaytombo and then take the "Backpacker" train to km. 104 where they will hike on a portion of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu . The group will spend the night in a hotel in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, and then visit Machu Picchu the next day, returning by train to Cuzco in the afternoon.
At 12,000 feet above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake and the site of floating islands and some of the most unique villages on earth. Students will travel by bus to Puno and spend the first night there. Then, they will go by boat to the floating islands and then spend the second night with indigenous families on Taquile Island in the middle of the lake, followed by the return to Cuzco .
Students will take a one hour flight from Cuzco to the Amazon basin town of Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios province of Peru . From there, they will take a motorized launch up the Tambopata River to the Posada Amazonas jungle lodge, which is located in an area of primary rainforest. Through a series of lectures and field tours, students will have the opportunity to learn about rainforest ecology, bio-diversity, indigenous peoples and local development, land degradation, land-use, development and policy issues, and eco-tourism.
The program will incorporate a series of half-day and full-day field trips in the Cuzco area and the nearby Sacred Valley . Possible day-long trips include Pisac, Tipon, and Sacsayhuayman; and the GE classes will include walking tours to important cultural, economic, and political sites within Cuzco .
